We believe that we know everything about our planet, this the Earth is 100% explored and that there are no secrets anymore. Actually, we don’t know a thing. There are still parts of the planet where people haven’t researched, and doesn’t know what is there. The best examples are animals. We believe that all animals existing on our planet are known and available on Wikipedia, but there are many animals you didn’t know exist. The best example is an Aye-aye.
This is a lemur, lives in Madagascar and it looks very different from the animals we have seen. It combines thin, long middle finger, used for extracting insects from wood and teeth like rodent. Aye-aye is the largest nocturnal primate and one of a few animals with a unique way of finding food. It taps on trees, to find the insects inside, drills a hole and whit its long middle finger pulls out that insect.
Aye-aye lives high in the trees, although they come down sometimes, this is very rare. They mate, feed and sleep on those trees. During the day they are sleeping in their nests and during the night they are searching for food. They are very social animals. Females have their own territory which often overlaps with a few territories of males. It is known that males often share their nest with other males (but never at the same time).
This animal is classified as endangered species by IUCN, and there are several Aye-aye held in captivity used for research and breeding. If you are wondering why it has such an unusual name, look at the picture.
