Emus Lay 20 Eggs In One Go, But The Male Emu Loses A Lot More Weight While He Sits On Them

If you keep the ostrich in oblivion, the emu becomes the largest bird in the world. Emus are to be found only in Australia, but they are found all over Australia. Emus are known to keep a close tab on what lies around them. They don't prefer living in dense forests or even in densely populated areas. All said and done, they prefer to live in woods and areas where they can find a lot of food and the vegetation can camouflage them.

Emus are  nomadic in nature. They like to move around from place to place. They are known to travel long distances in search of food. Their diet is made of insects, fruits and seeds.

Emus are prized for their meat. They are good sources of oil and leather too. Oil extracted from emus holds medicinal value. It is capable of treating pain in the joints. It is used for treating injuries that sportsmen get. The power to heal and treat joint pain is also exploited in treating arthritis. This has lead to elaborate farms being set up that specialize in rearing emus.

Emus cannot fly primarily because of their heavy weight and large size. They can grow up to 2 meters in length. The size of their neck and legs is large as compared to their bodies. Their long legs mean they can clock high speeds of 25 mph. The speed can be raised to 30 mph in emergencies.

Summers in Australia in December witness breeding among emus, while mating takes pace in the cooler months. There can be as many as 20 eggs in one go. The male member sits over the eggs for the purpose of incubation of eggs. It doesn't eat much during its tenure as incubator.
