The highland cattle are a special type of cattle, which has a hairy body. They have long horns and their origin is Western Isles and Highlands of Scotland. Their wavy coats make them unique in appearance. The color varies from black, red, brindled, yellow, dun and many more varieties. These cattle are bred primarily for their meat. It is because their meat is very low in cholesterol, which has made them a worldwide craze. These cattle have been exported to Australia for mass production.
The hairy and wavy coats help these cattle to acclimatize to the rugged weather conditions in which they are bred. They are able to withstand cold rain and winds because of their fur and hence are known to b hardy animals. Another skill, which helps them to sustain, is their skill of food search and foraging. Such skill set is generally not available in other cattle of the animal husbandry. Their extraordinary large horn also helps them to dig out plants from under snow, thus making them the fittest to survive in the extreme mountainous conditions.
The bulls can be as heavy as 800 kg whereas the females weigh up to 500 kg. These animals are usually docile but they can be very aggressive when it comes to protect their younger calves. They also have a longer life span of almost 20 years. The milk the cows produce is very high in butterfat. The herd of these cattle is known by the name of fold. The Scots call them kyloes.
