What dog Years Really Mean

What dog Years Really Mean

House pets are important for many people. They are not just animals, they are members of a family. Because of this, many pet owners are trying to understand the dog years and translate them into our years. Also, they are trying to provide the best care for their dogs and extend their lifespan. However, not all people understand what dog’s years are.
You should know that translating dog’s years in human years isn’t hard, but it isn’t very accurate as well. Some dogs live longer and some live shorter. For example, small dogs like Toy Poodles and Chihuahuas live longer. They can live up to 18 or even 21 years. Larger dogs, like Newfoundlands and Mastiffs live between 9 and 11 years. Almost all dogs are adult at the age 2. This means that 12 years is for their first year, 10 for the 2nd   and 7 for next years. But later they are reduced from 5 to 3.
Timnah Lee from the New York City (Tribeca Soho Animal Hospital), likes to compare the lifespan of dogs with stages in human lives. For example, a puppy, 6 months old, is similar to a toddler.
Cats live between 14 and 18 years. But, some of them can live even longer. Siamese cats live longer. Translating their years into humans is a bit more difficult, but it is possible. Here, the rule of thumb has an important role. Early years equal 7 of our years. But, later years are equal to 5 human years. Remember that cats that are kept in a house has less risk that can end their life.
