Cats require training similar to dogs. Cats usually respond to positive reinforcement rather than negative punishment. You should use reward based training to teach new behaviors. If you punish your car it can cause stress which can then be a cause for the behavior of the cats. SO here are some tips that you can use to train your cat
The best way to teach not only your cat is my giving it treats. Dont just give them treats which you give dogs. Most of the times, cats like treats that are gooey, soft and stinky. Not all cats respond to the same treats. You can try diced chicken or turkey, meat flavored baby food, commercial cat treats or low sodium tuna as treats.
Reward when needed: Don't just reward your cat to teach it a new behavior. Get it used to receiving the treats it loves only when it responds to specific behaviors. You can start of with simple tricks like teaching it to give high five. It shows your cat that during training session’s good things comes as rewards.
Practice: Like any sport or anything new that need to learn, practice is the key. When we mean practice, we don't mean over doing it.
Use Clicker: You can try to use a clicker to enforce timing and cut down on treats. Timing can play an important role in changing your cat's behavior.
Move On to Next: Once your cat has mastered the trick or behavior it was supposed to, you can then introduce new tricks like down, come and stay. You need not limit yourself to these tricks. You can get creative and teach many tricks.
