China's Yulin Festival prompts outrage

The Yulin Festival is a brutal festival where dogs are eaten. That is not the worst part. Dogs are kept in unsanitary conditions. They are skinned alive. At other times they are boiled and burned to death. Some dogs are even beaten to death.

Such cruel treatment towards dogs is not taken lightly by activists who strongly advocate banning this festival. The inhumane way thousands of dogs are treated has sparked outrage on social media last year. This year it is no less.

Every year, this Yulin Festival is organized in the month of June. The festival is held in Yulin City in China.

Why the festival?

This national dog-eating festival of China has been conducted over the course of centuries. It is not something new. People have been doing this for years and for years no one has condemned this brutal tradition.

The main reason for this tradition is that men believe eating dog meat promotes more heat in the body and helps sustain good health.

Popular folklore also suggests that eating dog meat brings good luck.

In fact, they make sure they kill these dogs in front of other captive dogs to initiate fear in them. Some of the Chinese believe that the fear in the animals increases the adrenaline in their bodies, which in turn makes the meat tastier.

Other Problems

The brutality of the innocent animals is one thing, but there are other problems associated with this festival as well. Street dogs that are often stolen carry diseases. Dogs kept caged in unsanitary conditions also can spread diseases.

The Chinese government is trying to not associate themselves with this festival but are not doing anything to outlaw it.
