Wild canids are one of the finest predators in the jungle. The creature is classic example of how famous animals like tigers, elephants and lions draw conservation money and least know animals are being neglected. Forests of central and East Asia are full of this rustic carnivorous animal. Wild boar and sambar are scared of its presence. The wild dog like creature fills forests with howls and whistles.
Dholes are so good at hunting that they sometime climb the food chain and kill tiger. But such cunningness is not enough to survive in the world now. The animal also has to fight humans. The poachers and hunters equipped with modern guns easily kill these animals. Unregulated hunting has placed dholes in the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List.
As per the latest data, there are around 949 to 2215 dholes roaming in the wild. This number is smaller than world’s breeding tigers. The conservation experts hope that strong campaign like save tiger will boost the hopes. The forgotten predator is not even topic of discussions among researchers. Decreasing forests covers are reducing their natural habitat.
On being asked about the situation, Conservation biologist Kate Jenks simply responded that a dhole is not as sexy as a tiger. She is one of the few experts who have studied dholes. Jenks has been collaring, tracking the species since nine years in the Thailand. The same forests host leopards and tigers. There are no clear answers to why dholes are being ignored.
