The king of the jungle faces danger

The king of the jungle faces danger

The lion is often known as king of the jungle not only because of the royal look this cat inherits. The lions were most populated mammals on the Earth after Humans around 10,000 years ago. The lions ruled dense forests of Africa and Western Europe, along with regions of India and Americas.

Today the animal has become one the endangered species on the planet as the population is decreasing by 30 to 50 percent in Africa. In Asia, Gir National Park located in western India is the only home to the lion.  Clashes with local human beings and habitat loss are the main reasons behind the population decline.

The average age of the lion in open forest is 10-14 years but the creature can survive up to 20 years if held in captivity and given proper care. Males have less life expectancy as they are unable to survive wounds due to fights and hunting. The lion, one of the five big cats weighs around 250 kilograms and largest living cat after the tiger.

Lions are typically known for their hunting activities but they also perform the function of a scavenger in the forest ecosystem. More than half of the share of the lion’s diet is gathered from scavenging.  Female lions mostly hunt in groups and there are very rare incidences of lions killing humans for the food.

After 18th century, demand for lions grew to exhibit them in number of zoos worldwide. Efforts have been maximized around the world to save King of the Jungle from going extinct.
